Be Careful What Cable Tells You…

I was watching a recording of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” for the 80th time today (and no, my son won’t accept Halloween is over!), and saw an ad that really surprised me.

The advertisement claimed to be a product of the FCC and talked about the switch to digital television in February. What bothered me about the ad, was that across the top was a message from a local cable company.

The message said, “XYZ cable customers do not need to worry about the switch. Your service will not be affected. If you do not subscribe to XYZ please call us to find out how to avoid losing your television service.”

This is VERY misleading. It sounds like the only way to avoid losing your television service is to subscribe to this particular cable company, when in reality there are other options available to you.

I’ve already written about the switch from analog to digital television, but I think that in light of the latest sneaky advertising it is worth mentioning again.

You can still watch television after February 17, 2009.

You only need one of these things to make it possible to watch TV:

  • An HD television with a digital tuner
  • An HDTV converter box. You can get $40-off coupons here.
  • Satellite television service
  • Cable television service
  • Internet access (you can watch TV online through services like Hulu.)

So don’t let one cable company scare you into paying through the nose so you can watch TV. There are other options available.
