Frugal Things to Do When Waiting

One day a week I drop my son off at preschool and have three hours to kill in town before I pick him up again.

There’s not enough time to go home during that time. (It’s an hour round-trip.) But it is enough time to get into trouble shopping.

Since I know I’m probably not alone in this situation, I thought I’d share my ideas for frugal things to do when waiting.

1) Visit a friend. Meet up for coffee with a friend. You’ll get a chance to have a relaxing conversation with a grown-up. Well worth a cup of coffee!

2) Read. Bring a book of your own, or head to the public library. Find a place with free wireless internet, and catch up on your e-mail.

3) Bargain Hunt. This can be very dangerous. It’s best to go bargain hunting with a strict budget and a clear sense of purpose. I especially like browsing the thrift stores.

4) Exercise. Head to the gym or go for a walk. You’ll find new energy for when you’re home again with the kids.

5) Get organized. I like to use “idle time” to brainstorm goals for myself or the house, clip coupons, or plan menus for the week. Poor husband doesn’t like it when I use my time this way, his list of things to do gets longer! I carry a notebook with me so that I can jot down my plans and ideas.

What are some frugal things you do when you’re waiting?
