There’s No Such Thing as Recession-Proof

I don’t know why I keep watching the morning “news” shows, but I can’t help myself whenever I get a chance to watch something other than Thomas the Tank Engine!

Lately I’ve found that many of the morning shows have segments like “Recession-proof your career” and “Recession-proof your life.”

But guess what folks? That is an impossible task. You can make your life and your career recession-resistant, but you can’t prevent the effects entirely.

Whether you like it or not, you will be affected by the recession. You’re already experiencing it through shrinking packages, through job layoffs, or higher prices on everything. Maybe you are having trouble getting a mortgage or paying your current one. Your credit card rates may have suddenly jumped or your credit limit was lowered. I could go on and on and on….

My father-in-law often tells my husband, “Keep your left up, Kid.” It’s a boxing reference to make sure you keep on fighting, that you always keep your guard up. And that is exactly what you have to do in these tough economic times.

Don’t stop clipping coupons. Don’t stop scrutinizing your expenses and watching your bank statements. Don’t stop funding your emergency and retirement funds. And most of all, don’t stop dreaming. It’s good to envision a future where things aren’t quite so hard. It’s what will drive us to better times.
