Sometimes It’s Worth It to Pay More for a Trim

The difference between an $18 haircut and a $30 haircut is not just 12 bucks.

A while ago I was in a craft store when I heard someone say “Oh, Susan, Hello!” I looked up to see a lady I didn’t recognize. I tried to place her face as we chatted but couldn’t figure out who she was. We were getting to the point in the conversation where it would have been embarrassing to ask her name when I noticed her hair. BANG! I knew instantly. She was the woman who taught our class in first grade. Twenty-three years later she still had the same hairdo. I had a revelation on the spot, I need a good hairdresser to keep me from the same fate.

For those of you who always get the same cut and you always look great, kudos to you. I can’t. I need someone who knows what they are doing to spruce me up now and again. Since I don’t style my hair, the cut is very important.

This fall I got 8 inches whacked off and donated it. The gal did a wonderful job but the cost was a little on the high side. So I asked around and a friend told me about her haircut gal who charged $18 for the same service. I made an appointment.

I am now aware that the following tips may have helped me:

Have a chat with your hairstylist about how much styling you are willing to do. Don’t lie.
Be really clear about what you do and do not want. For example: I must be able to put it all in a ponytail at the back of my head.
Have her show you the final length.
Tell her how you usually part your hair and about any cowlicks you might have.
Point out any parts of your face you want to camouflage. My face is round, round, round and my hair is red. I really shouldn’t have a chin length bob or I look like a pumpkin.
I never take in a picture as I can’t ever imagine someone else hair on me but I know folks who do that are come out looking spectacular.
It’s hair. It will grow back.

There is a reason some stylists charge $30 and some don’t. It’s more than just 12 bucks. Anyone know a good haircut place in Green Bay?
