As many of you know, I’m all about making your dollars stretch. One way to do that is to buy quality clothing and take good care of it. That means not washing and drying your clothes too much.
I’ve been thinking about how many times I wear things before I wash them since one of my New Year’s resolutions was to be a little more environmentally-conscious, and it occurred to me that I could be doing a little better in this area.
For example, I’m very good about wearing sweatshirts and sweaters more than once before washing, but jeans are hit and miss. Socks and undergarments get washed after one wear, but I know a few people who wear socks more than once. I wash my pajamas once a week.
To contradict myself, my boys wear a fresh pair of pajamas every night. I don’t know why – other than I’m just to lazy to make sure their jammies get hun on their hooks.
It has been an unintentional experiment – but I have definitely found out that frequent washings does wear out your clothes faster – not to mention uses more water and electricity to clean. Not to mention I feel like I’m doing laundry all the time.
So in honor of my New Year’s resolution, I’ve decided to try to get more wears per washing of all of our clothing. I guess I’ll have to work on my “sniff check.”
I’m wondering what all of you do when it comes to washing clothes. How often do you wear something before you toss it in the laundry? Please ‘fess up so I don’t feel weird for using the words “sniff check” in a post!

wow. I feel pretty grubby by comparison! I'll wear pjs until they stretch out so much they're sloppy – this usually takes a little more than a week. Socks worn as slippers? Washed once every week/10 days. Clothes worn to work (in an office) – worn until they're stretched out or smell bad (or if I've spilled something): this means most pants/jeans get worn at least 3 times; shirts get worn 2-3 times (at least); sweaters get washed about 2x per season; wool skirts get cleaned about once a year.
My linen schedule is more like the group's: I wash my sheets about once per week and I wash my towels after about 3-4 uses. Interesting!
