I am not a numbers person and never have been. Perhaps it is because I grew up in a house with two people who could figure compound interest in their heads and I had a hard time adding without my fingers. Whatever the reason, when people start talking about numbers and percents and such, my eyes glaze over and my mind starts thinking about cookies.
I will take my data qualitatively, please. Tell me the story of what all those numbers mean and I will be hooked. That I can understand.
With that in mind, I have discovered a wonderful tool: WalletPop Calculators. It is a set of calculators that fill both my need to have numbers to make a decision and my desire to understand things as a story.
Instead of just plugging in numbers on a random calculator, you choose the category you need. For example, Automotive. You then choose the question that best fits what you are wondering. Let’s will go with: What Vehicle can I afford? You then are directed to the calculator. Answer a few questions and POP! You have the answer that gives you the sticker price and the amount you will need to finance. Go back and enter different numbers for down payment and monthly payment to see how it changes. I also REALLY like the graphs and tables that show the numbers you are looking at in different ways. I am telling you, these are PERFECT answers for a “not a numbers” person.
There are all kinds of categories and real questions we should all ask about our finances. They all work on the same idea, choose a question that you are trying to answer and put in the numbers that you have.

If you don’t use it today, add it to your favorites or Delicious account because I know you will need it in the future. I sure will!
