By Justin Weinger 13 Comments

We like to have an annual science playgroup with my kids and their friends, but we don't limit their science exposure to just that one playgroup. We have developed our own science kit so that we can do experiments at any time. If you are interested in buying a science kit for your kids, the Primary Science Set is a pretty complete start or this Lab-in-a-Bag has everything you need to start experiments right away and then you can ease your way in to doing those listed below. There are plenty … [Read more...]

How to Make Homemade Natural Insect Repellent

How to Make Homemade Natural Insect Repellent

By Justin Weinger 4 Comments

Chances are if you live in Minnesota or you have even visited the state you have seen the funny signs and t-shirts that display a large mosquito and says “Minnesota State Bird” (seriously though, our state bird is the Loon.) But being bit up by mosquitoes and gnats is not funny at all and neither is the amount of DEET or other chemicals used in most conventional insect repellents. Many people can experience serious side effects from prolonged heavy use of DEET such as memory loss, headaches, … [Read more...]

Chances are that if you have gone to a Children's Museum or taken a Parent-Child class you probably have experienced a variety of sensory table activities. Chances are that they did not spent vast amounts of money on purchasing these products that easily find their way on to the floor and are swept away to the trash. They probably made them. Easy to Make American Girl Doll Clothes

By Justin Weinger 8 Comments

Have an American Girl fan in your life? Or maybe it is another 18-inch doll that they have. If you have shopped for clothes and outfits for these petite treasures you realize that buying official American Girl outfits start at $24 and run as high as $72 (at the time of this post.) That is a lot of money for an outfit for a doll (in my book!) You don't have to have any sewing skills to make the American Girl doll clothes I am going to tell you about, and if you have already made a hat through … [Read more...]

Cheap Trick: Fix Scratched Wood

Cheap Trick: Fix Scratched Wood

By Justin Weinger 5 Comments

Here's a cheap trick you'll love: Fix scratched wood with a stain marker. You can find wood finish stain markers in a variety of colors at your local home improvement store. Pick one that matches the finish of your scratched wood furniture.  Shake up the stain marker, color in the scratch and rub it in with a dry paper towel or old rag.  The scratch will disappear! Be sure to test a small area first to make sure it looks the way you want.  I've found that this trick works best on … [Read more...]

Introduction to Loom Knitting

Introduction to Loom Knitting

By Justin Weinger 2 Comments

Is learning to knit or crochet one of your goals? Have you considered loom knitting? I started out loom knitting because I really wanted to make knit projects but was having a hard time figuring our crocheting or knitting and found this so much easier to get my head around how to do. As a crafty person, I thought I should be able to figure it out how to stitch and it bothered me that I couldn't crochet or knit. I even took a community education class to learn to crochet and the teacher kept … [Read more...]

Pinterest Inspiration: Working with Ice

Pinterest Inspiration: Working with Ice

By Justin Weinger Leave a Comment

I had the best of intentions when I wrote "ice projects" on my calendar this month.  I had planned to find a couple of great ideas on Pinterest, try them myself and share the results in a post. Well, life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.  Things got busy, I realized that I still hadn't done the projects, and so I set out to try a couple of ice creations on Tuesday.  My goal was to create some ice globes and some ice luminaries. Just one little problem:  It hasn't been … [Read more...]
