Review: Street Smarts by Jim Randel

By Justin Weinger Leave a Comment

It amazes me that college graduates can spend tens of thousands of dollars on their degrees, and still lack the basic skills needed to survive in the workforce. Fortunately, there's a book for that. Jim Randel, author of the popular The Skinny On... series, has created Street Smarts: Beyond the Diploma, a comprehensive guide to surviving in the real world. Randel has taken the expertise from successful people from all walks of life and pulled it together in Street Smarts to create a … [Read more...]

Do You Have More Time Than You Think?

By Justin Weinger 1 Comment

I recently read 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think by Laura Vanderkam. To be brutally honest, while I was reading the book, I was not overly impressed.  I thought she went off topic quite a bit, writing many pages on how to get a job you like and some other topics (useful, but not really what the book was supposed to be about). However, the premise of the book has really stuck with me and I have noticed some great changes in the week since I finished the book. 168 hours refers … [Read more...]

Review: Free Stuff Everyday Guide

By Justin Weinger Leave a Comment

I remember one of the first freebies I ever requested:  A Louisville Slugger baseball pen.   I was just a kid, and I'd found the offer in a book called "Free Stuff for Kids" that I checked out of the library.  I sent out dozens of requests for things, but that's the only one I remember getting. Of course, now when you request freebies you don't have to use a postage stamp. I'm a regular reader (and huge fan) of numerous freebie hunting sites like Freebies 4 Mom and am amazed at what you can … [Read more...]

Review: The Money Class by Suze Orman

Review: The Money Class by Suze Orman

By Justin Weinger 2 Comments

I've watched more episodes of The Suze Orman Show than I can count.  I've read most of her books and spend time visiting the forums on Money Minded Moms.  I even got the opportunity to talk with Suze Orman on the phone. And despite all of that, she still finds a way to surprise me and teach me. I sat down with her latest book, The Money Class: Learn to Create Your New American Dream, expecting it to be a beginner's course for managing your personal finances.  I was expecting some of the … [Read more...]

Review: How to Have Your Cake & Eat It, Too

By Justin Weinger 2 Comments

Pick up a women's magazine or visit a mom blog and the chances are pretty good you'll find an article about balancing work and family. When I became a stay-at-home mom, I was desperate to find something I was passionate about outside of parenting. It was important to me to have something in my life besides my kids.  It was important to me that I continue to develop my skills and keep my mind sharp.  That desire led to the beginnings of Northern Cheapskate, and what was once a little hobby, … [Read more...]

Review: Home Ec 101 – Skills for Everyday Living

By Justin Weinger 1 Comment

When I first started reading Heather Solos' new book Home-Ec 101: Skills for Everyday Living , I was a little worried. With so much information packed into its pages, I worried that this book was going to be a rehash of all the things I already knew about running a household. But then I realized, that there was still a lot of stuff I needed to learn. Author Heather Solos (who also writes the excellent blog Home Ec 101) uses this book to teach us how to take better care of our living … [Read more...]

Review: More Make It Fast, Cook It Slow

Review: More Make It Fast, Cook It Slow

By Justin Weinger 3 Comments

The slow cooker is one of my most treasured kitchen items.  It is how I survive the chaos of living with three adorable, but very busy boys. A few years ago, I discovered Stephanie O'Dea's blog A Year of Slow Cooking.  O'Dea pledged to make something in her slow cooker every day for an entire year.  When I first started reading her blog, I thought "This would make a great cookbook!" And of course, I was right.  Her Make It Fast, Cook It Slow cookbook is one of my very favorites. O'Dea … [Read more...]
