Cheap Trick: Keep Ice Cream from Crystallizing

Cheap Trick: Keep Ice Cream from Crystallizing

By Justin Weinger 1 Comment

When it's a hot summer day, the last thing you want to do is open your freezer and find a carton of ice cream that's been crystallizing. Who wants crunchy ice chunks in their ice cream? Many moons ago, back in college, I worked at an ice cream shop.  And there I learned a little trick that helps keep ice cream from crystallizing. Place a sheet of wax paper over the ice cream before you put the lid on and put in the freezer.  It will keep the ice cream from getting ice crystals on it and … [Read more...]

Cheap Trick: A Use for Old Vinyl Window Shades

Cheap Trick: A Use for Old Vinyl Window Shades

By Justin Weinger 1 Comment

When my boys were little they had vinyl window shades in their bedroom.  After many months of being opened and closed for nap times and being touched by little hands, the room-darkening shades started to get rips in them. Because the boys were young and, well, boys, I wasn't in a hurry to spend the money to replace them when they ripped.  So I repaired the rips with clear packing tape and got more life out of them. Now that the boys are older, I've replaced their vinyl shades with new … [Read more...]

Cheap Trick: Make Candles Last Longer

Cheap Trick: Make Candles Last Longer

By Justin Weinger Leave a Comment

Candles are a beautiful way to add to your home's decor, but they can be expensive. Make candles last longer (and burn more slowly), by putting them in the freezer for a few hours before you use them.  This works especially well with taper and pillar candles.   You'll find you even get less drips.  Just make sure not to leave them in the freezer too long or it may crack the candle.  If you're worried about that happening, chilling candles in the refridgerator works, too. You'll also extend … [Read more...]

Cheap Trick: Another Use for Hand Sanitizer

Cheap Trick: Another Use for Hand Sanitizer

By Justin Weinger 6 Comments

Today's cheap trick comes from reader Michelle T. She writes, "Most of us use hand sanitizer to be as germ-free as we can,  but did you know that you can use it to remove ink from your hands? Try it!" As you can see from my Minnesota-chapped hands in the photos above, it works!  I used a little bit of Purell Hand Sanitizer, and with a little bit of rubbing, it took the ink right off my hand. My guess is that it is the alcohol in the hand sanitizer that removes the ink.   I like this … [Read more...]

Cheap Trick: Use Store Brand Products in Recipes

Cheap Trick: Use Store Brand Products in Recipes

By Justin Weinger Leave a Comment

You can trim the cost of your meal prep when you use store brand products in recipes instead of the pricier, name brand products. For example, if a casserole calls for a cream soup, pick up a store brand can instead of a name brand and save 30% or more on the cost of the soup.  Substitute store brand flour, sugar, or butter in recipes.  Consider store brand cheeses or other dairy products to add to your meals. Then save your grocery money for those items in your recipe that need to be a … [Read more...]

Cheap Trick: How to Tell If An Egg is Fresh

Cheap Trick: How to Tell If An Egg is Fresh

By Justin Weinger Leave a Comment

Got a few eggs left in the carton that are past their "best by" date? There's a simple test you can do to tell if an egg is fresh and still okay to eat. Just fill a bowl with cold water and place the egg in the bowl.  If the egg floats to the top, it's no longer safe to eat, so toss it.  If it's bumping the bottom, it's still okay, and if it's laying on the bottom, it's still fresh. I remember this by thinking of the deadman's float.  If the egg floats, don't eat it! Check out our … [Read more...]

Cheap Trick: New Uses for Old Socks

Cheap Trick: New Uses for Old Socks

By Justin Weinger 1 Comment

Find new uses for old socks before you toss them in the trash! Northern Cheapskate reader Sharon L. shares her tips for old worn-out socks: "I toss them in a bin we have set aside to use for checking the oil in the car, or checking the fluid levels. They are great as a makeshift mitten/glove, you can wipe the dipstick off on it, then toss it.  I also use them to dust around the house, but I wash and reuse them if possible.  I just have to be careful not to put them back in to our sock … [Read more...]
