Happiness is… Fresh Food

Happiness is… Fresh Food

By Justin Weinger 7 Comments

After a period of slow growing,  we're finally starting to be able to enjoy fresh food from our garden and yard. And it is pure happiness!  I've picked more than 3 quarts of fresh raspberries, and we've enjoyed several meals of broccoli and green beans from our little garden plot.  We've even had enough cherry tomatoes for a salad. There's something immensely satisfying about being able to eat food that you have grown. It's nice to know where it was grown, how it was grown, and you simply … [Read more...]

Garden Update: Slow Growing

Garden Update: Slow Growing

By Justin Weinger 1 Comment

How does my garden grow? Slowly. We had a bit of a late start this year because the weather was unseasonably cold (we had snow in May!) and damp at the beginning of the season.  Then we alternated between cool and rainy and hot and humid. So unlike past years, we haven't been able to harvest much from our two little 4x4 garden plots.  We've had just one meal of green beans and that's it.  The broccoli plants are barely forming heads.  The cherry tomatoes are still green.  Some of my … [Read more...]

A Late Start to the Garden

A Late Start to the Garden

By Justin Weinger 2 Comments

We're a little behind schedule when it comes to our garden this year. It's not really our fault either.   The weather has been unseasonably cold and damp here. I would have loved to have start my garden from seed, but life was just too busy for me to get to it. We made our annual trek to our favorite local greenhouse and I picked out veggies to plant in our two 4'x4' raised beds:  2 cherry tomato plants, 6 hybrid tomato plants, 2 kohlrabi, 10 broccoli plants, and 26 bush bean plants.  I … [Read more...]

Time to Start Planning Your Garden

Time to Start Planning Your Garden

By Justin Weinger Leave a Comment

If you are an experienced gardener, you know that there are some seeds you need to start indoors NOW in order for them to be ready to be planted. Don't worry too much if you didn't get those March items planted indoors already, you may still have enough time. A majority on this list do not need to be planted until April and there are some you can plant in May. Starting your own seeds indoors can save you money over buying seedlings in the spring. This is also the time when seed companies offer … [Read more...]

Review: Urban Gardening for Dummies

Review: Urban Gardening for Dummies

By Justin Weinger Leave a Comment

Those of you who know me are probably surprised that I even picked up a book called Urban Gardening For Dummies, let alone decided to review it. You see, I am as about as far away from an urban area as you can get.  My house is surrounded by a forest. Deer sleep in my backyard.  It's a 30-mile drive just to get to any place that has shopping. Not exactly urban. But I am interested in gardening, and I still feel I am relatively "green" at this hobby, I decided that it couldn't hurt to … [Read more...]

Cheap Trick: Organizing Seed Packets

By Justin Weinger Leave a Comment

Reader Dave sent in this cheap trick after I had mentioned using trading card protector pages to organize coupons: He recommends using CD/DVD protector pages for organizing seed packets for gardening. He writes, "I categorize all seeds and use separate 3-ring binders to hold the plastic protector pages by category; salad in one binder, salsa in another, etc, and like plants or those that work together in their own 3-ring binder." This would be an excellent way for gardeners to organize … [Read more...]
