Garden Update: And Then The Frost Came

Garden Update: And Then The Frost Came

By Justin Weinger 4 Comments

One crisp, foggy morning last week, I noticed this beautiful spiderweb on my deck.  The sunlight bounced off the dew on the web and I just knew I had to get a photograph of it. I stepped out onto the deck, which was very wet with dew, and started snapping photos. And that's when I started to hear this weird noise.  I could hear it moving like a wave across the woods and swamp behind my house, across my deck.  It was a gentle cracking sound with a rustling of leaves that sounded almost like … [Read more...]

The Hazards of Flushable Wipes

The Hazards of Flushable Wipes

By Justin Weinger 4 Comments

This summer when we had our septic tank pumped for it's routine cleaning, the crew told me it was great that my family didn't use flushable wipes. Why? Because they don't disintegrate in septic and sewer systems.  One worker told me he had replaced dozens of $400 septic pumps at people's homes because of so-called "flushable" wipes.  He also said a nearby town had to shell out $5,000 to repair a lift station and rip out 20 feet of sewer line because of a daycare that had been regularly … [Read more...]

Happiness is… Fresh Food

Happiness is… Fresh Food

By Justin Weinger 7 Comments

After a period of slow growing,  we're finally starting to be able to enjoy fresh food from our garden and yard. And it is pure happiness!  I've picked more than 3 quarts of fresh raspberries, and we've enjoyed several meals of broccoli and green beans from our little garden plot.  We've even had enough cherry tomatoes for a salad. There's something immensely satisfying about being able to eat food that you have grown. It's nice to know where it was grown, how it was grown, and you simply … [Read more...]

Cheap Trick: Install a Wall Timer Switch

Cheap Trick: Install a Wall Timer Switch

By Justin Weinger Leave a Comment

As a self-proclaimed cheapskate, one of my frustrations was discovering that someone had left the bathroom fan on long after it was needed.   I hated the excess noise and I hated the wasted electricity. The solution: Install a wall timer switch. … [Read more...]

Is Bigger Really Better When It Comes to Houses?

Is Bigger Really Better When It Comes to Houses?

By Justin Weinger 4 Comments

One of my guilty pleasures is the show House Hunters on HGTV.  I watch it because I love to see the inside of houses and hear how buyers think about making such a major purchase. Each show opens with an explanation of why the person (or couple) is looking for a new home.  Many times, it is a young family that is expecting another child.  Sometimes it is a couple that is getting married. They all want "more space"  and there's usually plenty of it to find. Since the 1950s, the average home … [Read more...]

Garden Update: Slow Growing

Garden Update: Slow Growing

By Justin Weinger 1 Comment

How does my garden grow? Slowly. We had a bit of a late start this year because the weather was unseasonably cold (we had snow in May!) and damp at the beginning of the season.  Then we alternated between cool and rainy and hot and humid. So unlike past years, we haven't been able to harvest much from our two little 4x4 garden plots.  We've had just one meal of green beans and that's it.  The broccoli plants are barely forming heads.  The cherry tomatoes are still green.  Some of my … [Read more...]
