Cheap Trick: Install a Wall Timer Switch

As a self-proclaimed cheapskate, one of my frustrations was discovering that someone had left the bathroom fan on long after it was needed.   I hated the excess noise and I hated the wasted electricity.

The solution: Install a wall timer switch.

When we built our house several years ago, one of the things we did was have our bathroom fans put on a 15-minute wall timer switch. That way we wouldn’t forget to shut off our bathroom fans after a shower or other activity in the bathroom.  Simple turn the fan on for up to 15 minutes and when the timer is done, the fan shuts itself off.

The timer is also great for preventing excessively long showers. You know that if the fan switches off when you’re in the shower, you’ve been in there too long. It makes you move a little bit faster in the morning. I now try to get completely ready (shower, hair, everything) in that fifteen minute time frame. So I save time, too!
