DIY Healthy Patriotic Smoothies

DIY Healthy Patriotic Smoothies

I have this thing about making red, white and blue crafts, treats, decorations, and food for our patriotic holidays. My kids think it is neat to see what I come up with and certainly enjoy consuming anything I make. I try not to go way overboard, but I like to keep in mind using red, white and blue food items because it can really help decorate the table and make it seem more festive without having to spend money on decorations.

Fruit for the DIY Healthy Patriotic Smoothies

I made these DIY healthy patriotic smoothies for 4 people using strawberries, bananas and blueberries. The following recipe will make 4 tall glasses of the delicious red, white and blue you see pictured, but you could use shorter glasses and stretch it out further. It is quite a bit of smoothie in these tall glasses and it’s quite filling.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pint blueberries
  • 2 bananas
  • 1/2 pound strawberries
  • 1/2 C milk (separated to 1/4 C and 1/4 C)
  • 1/2 C apple juice
  • 12 ice cubes

Directions:

Make each layer separately. If you have a personal blender with multiple cups, that will work perfect for this, otherwise you will need to rinse your blender in between layers.

Start with the blueberry layer. Combine pint of blueberries, 1/4 C of milk and 5 ice cubes in a blender. Blend until as smooth as possible. The color will darken the longer you blend the peels of the berry, this may take 3-4 minutes to break up the peels to get a nice dark color. Pour in to the bottom of the glasses, split equally among them.

Make the banana layer second using 2 bananas, 1/4 C milk and 2 ice cubes. Blend until smooth. This will only take about a minute. Pour on top to the blueberry layer.

Finally make the strawberry mixture. Put 1/2 pound fresh strawberries, 1/4 apple juice and 5 ice cubes in the blender and blend until smooth. This will take about a minute. Use fresh strawberries for a more vibrant color and using apple juice (instead of milk) helps keep the color vibrant.

Celebrate your patriotism with DIY Healthy Patriotic Smoothies

You can see here how we turned a normal breakfast in to a little more festive one just by having these fun healthy smoothies at the table.

Enjoying the DIY Healthy Patriotic Smoothies

My kids were loving them, as well as did my husband and myself. And what’s not to love with them being chock full of fruits?

In June, I will be sharing some more patriotic food ideas on Save Green Being Green, but in the mean time feel free to check out these other ones I have already shared using fruit:

We love making smoothies at home as well and the kids love helping out! I’m sure this is going to be a hit on the 4th of July especially if you’re hosting a party/barbecue! It’s really easy to put together too.

Now this seems better than some of the DIY cold treats I’ve read from different sites. Aside from three layers, it’s really fun to choose a level of taste by some easy adjustments for the straw. Smoothies are just perfect anytime, any place.
