Have an American Girl fan in your life? Or maybe it is another 18-inch doll that they have. If you have shopped for clothes and outfits for these petite treasures you realize that buying official American Girl outfits start at $24 and run as high as $72 (at the time of this post.) That is a lot of money for an outfit for a doll (in my book!)
You don’t have to have any sewing skills to make the American Girl doll clothes I am going to tell you about, and if you have already made a hat through the Loom Knitting Tutorial I shared with you earlier this year, then the hat and scarf will be a piece a cake and you can make a matching set. If you have been a part of the American Girl culture long enough, you know how much little girls love the matching sets where they can match with dolls either through having a Just Like Me doll or having matching clothes. I don’t know about you, but the matching girl and doll outfits are out of my budget so I need to make them. It took me 30 minutes or less to make each one of these items.
Tutu Instructions: The instructions to make an 18″ doll tutu are basically the same as the ones I provides to make a Girls Dress-Up Tutu. To make the 18″ doll tutu I used 11″ of 1/2 inch elastic that you could hand stitch in to a circle if you do not have a sewing machine. Then I cut 24 pieces of tulle from a 6-inch roll, Each piece measured 13 inches in length. Assembling the tutu for a doll is the the same as making a little girls tutu. And if you are lucky you will probably have enough tulle leftover from making one for a child to make the matching doll one an little or no cost.
Knit Hat Instructions: If you haven’t tried loom knitting, check out my easy instructions on this Loom Knitting Tutorial to get you started. I used the smallest round loom, which is the blue one in the Knifty Knitter set. I cast on 18 row total to get the perfect length for a hat for an 18″ doll. To make the pompom on the top, I used the Clover Small Pom Pom Maker.
Knit Scarf Instructions: To make the scarf I used the Knifty Knitter Spool Loom and cast on 60 rows on the smaller side. Then I tied on tassel on the end by cutting 10 (5 for each side) 3″ pieces of yarn.
The spool loom could also be used to make some leg warmers for an 18″ doll by using the larger side and casting on 18-20 rows.
