Astronomical food prices shouldn’t crimp your entertainment plans. It is possible to have friends or relatives over for a tasty meal without breaking the bank.
My favorite way to entertain friends is to make the gathering potluck. Have everyone bring something to share. I love the wide variety of tasty treats people bring, and best of all, I don’t have to slave away in the kitchen all day long.
Don’t serve alcohol. It is possible to have fun without it! But if you must have a few drinks, watch for sales, or have guests bring a bottle of something to share.
Potluck not your thing? Then plan ahead. Plan your dinner menu around things you already have. Stock up during sales. Watch for great sales on soda around holidays (especially 4th of July, Labor Day, and Christmas). Baking items are on sale in the fall. Check out your farmers’ market for fresh vegetables in the summer.
Have a pizza party. Make pizza dough and provide a variety of toppings so that guests can make their own personal pizzas. You’ll be amazed at how creative people can be!
Plan your gathering around non-meal times. Have folks over for an evening movie or game night. Instead of serving a full meal, you can serve up a tasty dessert of a yummy snack.
Decorate with items you’ve made. Nature is a great provider of home decor: A nice vase filled with flowers from your garden, a collection of mini pumpkins and gourds,or pinecones can all make attractive centerpieces. Or just invite friends who don’t care about centerpieces!
What are some ways you save on entertaining?
