Even though I’m not a big fan of the show Extreme Couponing on TLC, I can’t help but watch. When you’re a couponer, you just can’t help but watch, I guess.
In one of the episodes a coupon diva is shown digging through a dumpster for coupons. I figured it was probably a recycle bin, so it couldn’t have been that bad.
Back when we lived in town, our neighbors had a moving sale and dumped all the stuff that didn’t sell into the dumpster in our alley. Most of it was kids’ stuff – and we didn’t have any at the time – so I wasn’t all that interested. But I still couldn’t help but think of how wasteful it was. I pulled a football out of the dumpster and brought it home for our dog. She’s still playing with it 6 years later.
My husband once pulled a perfectly good copy of Dr. Suess’s “Horton Hears a Who” out of the newspaper recycling. My parents scored a Sit ‘n’ Spin from the side of the road. And we’ve picked up more than a couple pieces of furniture from the curb.
I’ve never intentionally gone dumpster diving – only grabbed things that were in excellent condition near the top of the dumpster or the side of the road when I happened to see them. It feels good to rescue things from the landfill and to give new life to something no one else wants.
Have you ever gone dumpster diving? What kinds of things did you find?
