It’s easy to learn how to make your own butter. It doesn’t take many ingredients or a lot of time, and the results are amazing.
Of course, unless you have access to cream from a dairy farm, you won’t save any save any money by making your own.
I don’t have access to free cream, but let me tell you a few reasons why we decided to make our own butter. I like being able to control how much salt is used in the butter. I like being able to teach my children about how a commercial product can be made at home. And it tastes great!
How to Make Your Own Butter
Start out by gathering your minimal supplies that include a jar, heavy cream and salt (optional, but I like salted butter). Allow your cream to come to room temperature before starting.
Combine cream and (optional) salt to a jar and close tightly. I only add a few shakes of salt, but if you do not like salted butter than don’t add any. I have friends who love salt and they may want to add more than I do.
Start shaking the jar. Depending upon how vigorously you shake will depend how long you actually have to shake it. The kids and I took turns shaking it and it took us about 6-7 minutes to make the butter you see below.
I remember making this as a child in an elementary classroom. It certainly is a fun project to have kids take turns shaking the butter.
I had made Homemade Artisan Bread to try out our butter on. I know that the kids and I will be making more butter soon. It is delicious!
“Do you have any children, Brother Munson?” “Uh none that I know of….I mean, I can’t have children…nasty butter churning accident”
–Kingpin, one of the greatest comedies ever
Too funny! I had forgotten about that movie! Will have to watch it again!
I don’t think I have seen that movie. Sounds like something to look for on Netflix.
I was just thinking about making my own butter and then you post!
I was just wondering how much butter do you get from a litre (quart) of whipping cream?
I had not measured it, but if I had to guess, it was probably about a 1/2 C from that half pint of cream.
How long will the butter last?
I kept my in the fridge and used it up in 2 weeks and it was still good.
