I’m not the type of person who likes to leave things to luck. I’m a planner, an organizer, a do-er. But there are times that I think you can use luck to stretch your budget. Get lucky, and you could find yourself saving money.
How To Use Luck To Stretch Your Budget
There are some simple ways you can stretch your budget simply by letting luck play its hand.
Drawings and sweepstakes.
Somebody has to win drawings and sweepstakes, so why not you? It only takes a moment or two to fill out a form to win a drawing at a local store. It only takes a few minutes to fill out a sweepstakes entry. Just be smart about it: Never pay to play or redeem your prize. And use an e-mail address specifically for this purpose if you don’t want a lot of junk mail.
My son just won a brand new bicycle by putting his name in a drawing at a community event. A friend of mine won free flooring for her home in a sweepstakes at a local mall.
Keep your eyes open for drawings and sweepstakes at your favorite stores. You can also check out this extensive list of winnable sweeps at Freebies 4 Mom.
Facebook and blog giveaways.
Facebook and blog giveaways are similar to drawings and sweepstakes, but sometimes they’re easier to win – especially if the blog or Facebook page doesn’t get a lot of traffic. Follow the rules of the giveaway and throw your hat in the ring. You never know!
Over the past two years, I’ve won SIX free loaves of bread from the Country Hearth Bread’s Facebook Free Bread Friday giveaway and all it took was a simple mouse click. I’ve won gift cards and merchandise from blog giveaways that I can use for myself or for gifts. I once won a Fitbit Flex and a free month of Weight Watchers from a blog giveaway.
Swagbucks is a free service that awards you with points called SB. Collect enough SBs and you can turn them into gift cards from hundreds of merchants or cash in your PayPal account. Use the search engine function of Swagbucks to win an average of 15 to 25 SB. It costs nothing and you won’t win with every search, but with a little luck, you’ll be on your way to earning free gift cards in no time.
Look around for a local online auction site in your area or hit eBay. You may find an item you need for your home, garage or office at rock bottom prices. Put in a low, low bid, and if you’re lucky, you’ll win. You’ll get a new-to-you item for a fraction of what you’d pay new.
Hit garage sales, estate sales, and thrift shops for awesome bargains. Because inventory changes constantly, you’ll have to rely on persistence and luck to get the best deals. Sometimes you can even find some surprising bargains that you can turn around and sell for cold hard cash.
Companies all over the country are looking for feedback, and they’ll entice customers to give it to them by offering prizes. I’ve won a $25 gift card and free food from taking the time to answer a few questions about my shopping experiences. Check your receipts, product packaging and e-mails for survey info and take a few minutes to answer them. You could win a prize that would help you stretch your budget.
I’ll be honest with you – I know that relying on luck to stretch your budget isn’t a great way to save money. It’s far better to practice good frugal living skills and budgeting. But it doesn’t take much time or effort to do these things and if it keeps you from spending money on lottery tickets, raffles and other forms of gambling, it could save you a lot of money.
Your turn: Do you do any of these things to stretch your budget? What kinds of prizes have you won? What kinds of bargains did you find?
