When I read books to kids, sometimes I ask them to “help me” read the book by repeating parts of the story. Picture the tykes shouting “Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum” during Jack and the Beanstalk.
For this post, I need your help in the same way. When you read –I should have known better– in this post, please shake your head and mutter to yourself something along the lines of “MmmmHummm, Shoulda known better.” It’ll be fun.
While I do pretty well with saving my money but sometimes I miss the boat. Here are 3 examples where I could have taken a moment, made a better decision and saved myself some money.
I had a coupon for a buy-one-get-one-free bottle of shampoo. I put the 2 bottles in my cart along with quite a few other items. When I checked out, I handed the gal my wad of coupons and headed on down to bag up my stuff. When she was done, I slid my credit card , took my receipt and went home. About half way home I realized that the check out gal didn’t ask me the price of the shampoo. When I checked my receipt, she didn’t give me credit for the coupon.

I was in a hurry when I shut off the hose behind the house. The next day when I walked out to take care of the roses, the ground was much wetter than it should have been. I had left the water on, just a trickle, for a full 24 hours.

My laptop was off, open and on a living room chair. I had a giant glass of pineapple juice. The little table between 2 chairs in my living room had a couple of magazines on it. I set the glass on the magazines. Of course, the glass slid off and on to my laptop, filling the keyboard with juice. And the chair. And the carpet.
I dried everything out the best I could but ended up needing a new keyboard and the carpet cleaner.

Each of these costs could have been avoided with less than 30 seconds of attention. Since I can’t go back in time and make better decisions, all I can do is learn my lesson and go forward in life a little smarter.
A little wiser, a little more careful, a little more coin in my pocket. That is a-okay in my book.
