Just a reminder to all of you who are anxious to file your tax returns – You can file NOW!
And the best part? You can file your federal tax returns online for FREE at the following places:
There may be some income limits to qualify for the free tax prep and you may have to pay an additional fee ($15 to $30) to file your state income tax return, so be sure to check it out before you file.
You can also visit your local library or community center for free tax preparation services through the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. Trained volunteers will help you figure out your taxes if you’ve made less than $50,000. In addition, free volunteer tax preparation for seniors is available through AARP, and to members of the military through the Armed Forces Tax Council.
The sooner you can file, the sooner you will get your refund (or be able to lay out plans for payment if you owe). If your tax return is a bit more complicated, you should check out how to save money on getting your taxes done for additional money-saving tips.

Are there not income limits for free filing?
I don’t believe there are any income limits for these sites – but a more complex tax return may require an additional fee. It’s best to look at each of the sites to determine what works best for your situation.
I didn’t look at all of them, but a quick look showed H&R block limits are $57,000 AGI, which I think is fairly typical for the free filing. I have already purchased Turbo Tax. I always look, but no longer expect to get anything ‘free’. :)
Good point! I’ve updated the post to let people know to be aware of the income limits. Thanks for alerting me to that.
