When I told that to a friend of mine recently, he asked if I had any advice for how to save money on car repairs.
I jokingly responded, “Marry a mechanic.” I later followed that with the advice to keep up on maintenance. While it is sometimes spendy and can be an inconvenience, you’ll save a lot more money if address little things before they become big things.
Maintaining your car is the main thrust of the book How to Make Your Car Last Forever by Tom Torbjornsen. Torbjornsen has more than 40 years of automotive experience under his belt, and said the common theme behind the longest-lasting vehicles is careful, continuous maintenance.
How to Make Your Car Last Forever takes you through the basics of doing that maintenance. It covers every aspect of your automobile from the engine to the exterior. The book is full of color photographs and illustrations that demonstrate how things work and how to keep them working.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not much a do-it-yourself type – especially when it comes to auto mechanics. And some of the question and answer parts of the book were geared more to the automotive enthusiast.
But the basic information in How to Make Your Car Last Forever is very good. I gained a better understanding of how my car works and what things to watch for. It helps you understand how the various systems in your vehicle work together. For example, I always knew that it was important to make sure that your struts and shocks were replaced, but I hadn’t thought of the impact that work-out tires could have on them.
The section dedicated to tires will be very helpful when deciding what type of tires to buy next. And the section on extended warranties was very educational. I’ll know what questions to ask about coverage the next time we buy a new vehicle.
Every person who owns a vehicle should read this book. It’s full of good advice – you know – the kind of advice you should have taken from your dad, but didn’t.
Knowing how to properly maintain your vehicle and what questions to ask your mechanic can save you many costly repairs. How to Make Your Car Last Forever can help you learn how to do that maintenance, improve your fuel economy and save you money.Disclosure: Motorbooks sent me this book to review.
