Well, we’re 10 days into the No Eating Out Challenge and we’re surviving!
This is a major accomplishment since at the peak of our gluttony we were eating out 3-4 times a week.
The challenge started out rough. On the first day of the challenge my own mother tried to tempt me into going out to eat with her. On day 2, we were invited to a friend’s campaign victory party (my husband went because he was the campaign manager, but I stayed home with the kids). My husband also went out of town overnight for business on day 3. (I let him eat out… I mean, I’m not a total tyrant!)
And while I have not eaten at a restaurant or done take-out or delivery in 10 days, I must confess that I have still been making my regular visits to Caribou Coffee. It’s my favorite place to get blog work done while my boys are at preschool. I haven’t eaten anything there since I started the challenge – only drank a beverage. It’s kind of a gray area for a challenge like this, but for those of you who want to read what I write, I see it as a necessary evil.
My hubby and I also went to the movies for a date, and I had some popcorn and candy. I make no excuses or apologies for this. We needed the time together. I wanted a snack.
So while we haven’t been perfect in this No Eating Out Challenge, we have shown a MAJOR improvement in how we eat around here. And much to my surprise, I have enjoyed cooking!
I’ve enjoyed planning a menu, making a healthy meal, and coming up with strategies for leftovers. I’ve noticed that I’m retaining significantly less water since I started the challenge, probably because I don’t use nearly the amount of salt that most restaurants do!
My eyes have definitely been opened to the amount of restaurant marketing we’re exposed to on a daily basis. Once I started the challenge, I became acutely aware of all the television, radio, internet, newspaper, and magazine advertisements that focus on restaurants. I’ve been working hard at shutting out the noise, and reminding myself that I don’t need to eat out.
For those of you who have joined the challenge, how is it going for you? Have you been able to resist temptation?
