So, I paid a couple of neighborhood lads to rake my leaves this fall. I fully realize this is not in the cheapskate handbook. I could tell you all about by back surgery and how I don’t want to don’t want my surgeon or chiropractor to lecture me. Again. I could have talked a friend or 2 in to helping me out for an hour in exchange for dinner.
But as the leaves turned color this fall I got to thinking about how important it is for kids to understand the value of work. Allowances are a good tool for lots of families to teach about finances. But, when it comes down to understanding money, there is something to be said for earning it from someone who is not your family. Someone who pays you for your sweat and blisters. That money means something different. Something more.
So, I hired a couple of lads to rake my leaves. With any luck I will have helped to start them down the road of earning and saving and spending wisely. When I look at it that way, it is money well spent.
